Köyceğiz Lake Circuit Trail

The Köyceğiz Lake Circuit follows the eastern and southern shores of Köyceğiz Gölü — a large freshwater lake connected to the Aegean Sea via the Dalyan Channel — in the Köyceğiz district of Muğla. The circuit covers approximately 8 kilometres along the lake's agricultural fringe, passing through reed beds, citrus orchards, cotton fields, and olive groves with the lake surface as a constant companion. The trailhead begins from the lakefront promenade in Köyceğiz town, reachable by dolmuş from Muğla city (60 km, approximately ₺30, one hour). No permit is required. The path is predominantly flat and surfaced with a combination of compacted earth, gravel farm tracks, and occasional short unpaved sections through farmland. Total elevation gain is minimal — under 50 metres over the full circuit. The lake itself is an ecologically significant system supporting loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) that use the connected Iztuzu Beach nesting grounds near Dalyan, approximately 14 kilometres south by water. Along the circuit, birds are a notable feature: egrets, cormorants, pelicans, and marsh harriers are regular sightings in the reed beds. The southern end of the circuit passes the thermal springs that emerge at the lakeside — the same mud baths visited by boat tours departing from Köyceğiz town — and walkers occasionally encounter tour groups at this point. The circuit returns through citrus orchards producing the lemons, tangerines, and pomegranates for which the Köyceğiz region is locally renowned. The town itself has a pleasant waterfront promenade with teahouses, restaurants, and a small weekly market. Midsummer heat can be intense around the lake; the circuit is best walked in the cooler months or early morning.
