Urdaibai Estuary Walk

The Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve, declared by UNESCO in 1984, encompasses the Oka River estuary near Gernika-Lumo in Bizkaia, Basque Country, and represents one of the most ecologically significant wetland complexes in northern Spain. The estuary walk is a 10 km loop through a mosaic of tidal mudflats, reed beds, restored Atlantic oak woodland, and coastal dune habitats, following well-maintained earth paths and boardwalk sections around the estuary perimeter. The main trailhead and visitor hub is the Urdaibai Bird Center near Gautegiz Arteaga, reached by car from Gernika (approximately 8 km via the BI-2235 road). Free parking is available at the Bird Center. A seasonal passenger ferry connecting Mundaka and Laida beach within the reserve provides an alternative entry point at the coastal dune end. No permits are required for the walking trails; the Urdaibai Bird Center charges a small admission fee for its interpretive exhibitions and viewing areas. The loop covers 10 km with only 100m of elevation gain, graded easy, with most of the route at sea level. Boardwalk sections near the wetlands allow passage through reed beds and marsh edges without disturbing habitat. Shade is provided by the oak woodland segments on the inland portions of the loop. The reserve has records of over 200 bird species, and the estuary mudflats are a significant stopover on the East Atlantic Flyway. Key species include grey heron, little egret, Eurasian spoonbill, common kingfisher, osprey, and marsh harrier. Autumn migration from September through November brings the highest concentrations of waders and wildfowl to the mudflats. A permanent bird hide near the main observation area at the Bird Center provides elevated views over the tidal flats. No water is available on the trail; facilities including a café are located at the Bird Center. The loop can be divided into shorter sections for visitors who prefer a more brief walk around the central estuary area.
