Monte Urgull Circuit, San Sebastián

Monte Urgull rises to 124m above the Parte Vieja (Old Town) of San Sebastián in Gipuzkoa, Basque Country, and the circuit trail over its wooded summit is the most accessible hill walk in the city. The main access points are the signposted paths ascending from Calle 31 de Agosto and the Barrio de la Bretxa in the old town, both reachable on foot within five minutes from the central pintxos streets. No car access exists on the hill; San Sebastián city buses serve the old town. No permits are required and access is free at all times. The circuit covers approximately 3 km with 124m of elevation gain, rated easy for most visitors. Paths are a mix of paved stone, compacted earth, and gravel in good condition throughout, with clear waymarking. Dense pine and oak forest provides shade for most of the route. The trail climbs past the 16th-century Castillo de la Mota, which houses a military history museum, and continues to the monumental Sagrado Corazón statue at the summit, visible from the bay below. From the summit platform, views span the full arc of La Concha and Ondarreta beaches, the island of Santa Clara, the Cantabrian Sea to the north, and the Basque mountain range inland. A recommended circuit descends to the Paseo Nuevo seawall promenade, completing a loop around the hill's base. The trail can be walked in either direction; the old-town ascent is popular for early-morning visits and the Paseo Nuevo side suits afternoon light on the bay. No water sources are available on the hill. No café exists on the trail itself. The walk combines naturally with a visit to the Aquarium at the harbour base or with the pintxos bars of Parte Vieja directly below. The Castillo de la Mota charges a modest entry fee for its museum while the summit and Cristo statue are free.
