Top 10 Beaches
The best beaches Basque Country has to offer.
Playa de La Concha
Consistently ranked among Europe's most beautiful urban beaches, La Concha is a perfect crescent of golden sand sheltered by the island of Santa Clara and framed by a Belle Époque promenade. The calm, shallow waters are perfect for swimming and the views of Monte Urgull and Monte Igueldo are unforgettable.
Playa de Ondarreta
The western continuation of La Concha beach, Ondarreta is slightly quieter and more residential, backed by the Peine del Viento sculpture at its far end. The beach is beloved by San Sebastián families and has a more local feel than the busier La Concha.
Playa de Zurriola (Gros Beach)
San Sebastián's Atlantic-facing surf beach attracts surfers year-round thanks to consistent waves and a northerly swell. The Kursaal Auditorium's glass cubes dominate the eastern end. The beach and surrounding Gros neighbourhood have a younger, trendier vibe than La Concha.
Playa de Laga
One of the most spectacular and unspoilt beaches in the Basque Country, Playa de Laga sits within the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve with dramatic cliffs at its eastern end and dunes and pine forest behind. The Atlantic swells make for excellent but challenging surfing conditions.
Playa de Sopelana
Sopelana is one of the best and most accessible surf beaches near Bilbao, reachable by metro in under 45 minutes. The beach consists of three coves (Atxabiribil, Barinatxe, and La Salvaje) with excellent Atlantic surf and a strong local surf culture.
Playa de Zarautz
At nearly 3 km long, Zarautz is the longest beach in the Basque Country and one of the most popular. The town is both a sophisticated seaside resort and a serious surf destination, with a promenade lined with pintxos bars and restaurants, and annual surf competitions.
Playa de Mundaka
Mundaka is home to one of the world's longest and most perfect left-hand waves, a legendary barelling surf spot that appears when Atlantic swells funnel into the Urdaibai estuary. The village beach and harbour have a charming rustic atmosphere.
Playa de Lekeitio
A beautiful beach in the charming fishing town of Lekeitio, split in two by the islet of San Nicolás which can be walked to at low tide. The beach is flanked by the old town and harbour, with excellent fish restaurants within steps.
Playa de Getaria
A small, charming beach at the foot of Getaria's medieval fishing village, ideal for combining swimming with wine tasting at txakoli wineries and eating grilled fish at the harbour restaurants.
Playa de Hendaia (Hendaye Beach)
Technically in France but easily accessible from Hondarribia by ferry, Hendaye beach is 3km of golden sand with calm water at its southern end. The Franco-Basque experience of having pintxos for lunch and galettes for dinner is uniquely fun.
