Basque Coast Geopark Walk (Zumaia to Deba)

The Basque Coast Geopark Walk from Zumaia to Deba is a 13 km linear coastal trail within the UNESCO-recognised Basque Coast Geopark in Gipuzkoa, northern Spain. The route traverses one of Europe's most complete coastal geological sequences, where alternating bands of limestone and shale expose 60 million years of sedimentary history in the flysch formations that line the cliffs. The trailhead begins at Itzurun Beach in Zumaia, served by Lurraldebus buses from San Sebastián (approximately 45 minutes) and by Euskotren rail; limited paid parking is available near the beach. No permits are required for independent access. From Zumaia, the trail heads east along the cliff top, alternating between exposed headland paths with Atlantic views and lower sections close to the rocky shoreline. The surface is predominantly compacted earth and rock, with some paved stretches near the villages; the cliff-top sections are exposed and largely unshaded. Total elevation gain is approximately 250m, graded easy to moderate for reasonably fit walkers. The route passes the Algorri Visitor Centre near Zumaia, the Sakoneta sea-stack formations, and several dramatic viewpoints above the churning surf before reaching the medieval port of Deba. Deba's Gothic church of Santa María and its harbourfront mark the natural endpoint. The trail is walked in one direction only; most visitors return to San Sebastián from Deba by Lurraldebus bus (approximately 40 minutes) or Euskotren train. No permanent water sources exist on the cliff sections between villages; carry at least 1.5 litres. No refuge huts are present along the route. Peregrine falcons nest on the cliff faces, and the coastal scrub supports migrating passerines in spring and autumn. Geopark information boards at key points explain the geology in English and Spanish. The walk combines naturally with a visit to the Algorri Visitor Centre before departure from Zumaia.
