Praia da Marinha

Praia da Marinha sits on the coast of Lagoa in the central Algarve and is regularly ranked among the best beaches in Europe for the combination of amber-coloured limestone cliffs, sea arches and clear turquoise water in a compact sheltered cove. Visitors reach the beach via a steep stairway from the clifftop car park, which itself offers a well-known panoramic viewpoint over the arches and stacks that punctuate the shoreline. The beach floor slopes gently and the water is calm for much of the year, making it popular for swimming, while the rocky arches and underwater outcrops just offshore attract snorkellers exploring shallow pools and small fish. A typical visit lasts two to four hours, long enough for swimming, sunbathing on the narrow strip of sand, and a walk along the clifftop path that connects to the wider Seven Hanging Valleys trail. The beach is at its quietest in the first hour after sunrise, before the small car park fills and day-trip boat tours from Lagoa, Portimão, and Albufeira begin arriving; by mid-morning in July and August it can become crowded and parking spills onto the access road. Kayak rental operators near the cliff stairway offer short paddles into the surrounding sea caves, giving a different vantage point on the same rock formations seen from the clifftop above. Because the sand is exposed and there is little natural shade, visitors typically bring their own sun protection and arrive early to secure a spot close to the water.
