Algarve Family Travel Guide 2025
Everything families need to know for a successful trip to Algarve with kids.
The Algarve is Portugal's southernmost district, renowned for its dramatic golden limestone cliffs, over 150 pristine beaches, and more than 300 days of sunshine per year. Stretching 155 kilometres along the Atlantic coast, this sun-drenched region blends spectacular natural scenery with charming whitewashed villages, Moorish heritage, world-class golf, and a vibrant seafood cuisine.
Top Family Activities
The best experiences for families in Algarve.
Benagil Cave Boat Tour
The most magical Algarve experience for families — a boat weaves through sea arches, grottoes and the iconic Benagil Cave with its skylight opening. Children are usually transfixed.
Zoomarine Theme Park
Marine-themed park combining educational shows with dolphins, sea lions and exotic birds with water slides and pools. Excellent family day out near Albufeira.
Slide & Splash Water Park
One of Portugal's largest water parks with 20+ slides, a wave pool and dedicated areas for younger children. Extremely popular in July–August — go on weekdays.
Kayaking to Sea Caves
Guided kayak tours from Lagos or Carvoeiro that paddle through sea arches and into caves. Children aged 6+ can kayak on double kayaks with parents. An unforgettable adventure.
Coasteering
Guided coasteering (swimming, cliff jumping, cave exploration in wetsuits) along the Lagos coast. Children aged 8+ can participate with experienced guides. An incredible adventure.
Ria Formosa Ferry to Ilha Deserta
Take the ferry from Faro to Portugal's most southerly point — a deserted sandbar island with a single restaurant and miles of pristine beach. Children love the boat journey and the sense of adventure.
Silves Castle Visit
Children adore climbing the red sandstone ramparts and towers of this 1000-year-old Moorish castle. The August Medieval Fair adds jousting and period characters making it even more magical.
Krazy World Zoo & Adventure Park
A well-organised family park combining animal encounters (hold a python, pose with meerkats) with adventure activities including mini-golf, quad bikes and a summer pool.
Dolphin Watching from Portimão
Regular dolphin-watching boat trips from Portimão marina have excellent success rates year-round. Common, bottlenose and striped dolphins are frequently spotted. Children find the experience magical.
Jeep Safari through the Algarve Interior
Off-road jeep safari through the Algarve countryside visiting orange groves, villages and inland viewpoints. Includes swimming stop and local food tasting. Exciting for children and adults alike.

Ask for a meia dose (half portion) for children — usually available at most restaurants
Beach bar kiosks operate very informal service — children can arrive sandy and in swimwear
Pastelarias are perfect for family breakfasts — children love pastéis de nata and chocolate croissants
Most restaurants are happy to prepare plain pasta or grilled chicken for fussy eaters if you ask nicely
Family Travel Tips
Make traveling with kids easier.
Observe the beach flag system strictly — only enter the sea with a green or yellow flag flying and always watch children near the water
Apply and reapply SPF 50 sunscreen every 90 minutes — the Algarve sun is extremely strong May–October
Book Zoomarine and Slide & Splash online in advance to save 10–15% and avoid ticket queues
Rent a car with a GPS for the easiest family road trips — beach car parks can be hard to find without navigation
The Algarve has excellent pharmacies (farmácia) in all towns — recognisable by the green cross sign — for any medication needs
Many beaches offer beach wheelchair hire for family members with mobility needs — enquire at the beach lifeguard station
Consider a self-catering villa for families of 4+ — much more economical and practical than a hotel for extended stays
