The Algarve is Portugal's southernmost district, renowned for its dramatic golden limestone cliffs, over 150 pristine beaches, and more than 300 days of sunshine per year. Stretching 155 kilometres along the Atlantic coast, this sun-drenched region blends spectacular natural scenery with charming whitewashed villages, Moorish heritage, world-class golf, and a vibrant seafood cuisine.
Top 10 Day Trips
The best excursions from Algarve.
Sagres & Cape St. Vincent
The wild southwestern tip of continental Europe, combining Sagres Fortress — the launchpad for Portugal's Age of Discoveries — with Cape St. Vincent's legendary sunsets from the dramatically windswept southwesternmost point of mainland Europe. The surrounding Costa Vicentina is pristine and largely undeveloped.
Silves & Monchique Mountains
A perfect inland Algarve day combining Silves — with its magnificent Moorish castle and excellent seafood restaurants — with an afternoon drive into the Serra de Monchique hills for the Fóia summit view, a stroll through the thermal spa village of Caldas de Monchique and medronho brandy tasting at a local distillery.
Tavira & the Eastern Ria Formosa
Tavira is widely considered the most beautiful town in the Algarve — a graceful city of 37 churches, a Moorish castle, Roman bridge and traditional double-slope rooftiles unique to the eastern Algarve. After exploring the town, take the ferry to Ilha de Tavira for an afternoon on one of the Algarve's finest Atlantic barrier island beaches.
Sevilla (Seville), Spain
The magnificent Andalusian capital is an easy and spectacular day trip from the eastern Algarve, offering the extraordinary Alcázar palace complex, Catedral de Sevilla (the world's largest Gothic cathedral), La Giralda tower and the vibrant Santa Cruz quarter — all within 200km of Faro.
Lagos, Ponta da Piedade & Western Beaches
A classic Algarve day centred on Lagos — the most characterful town in the western Algarve — combining the walled medieval old town and historic Igreja de Santo António with an afternoon at the dramatic Ponta da Piedade sea stacks and a boat tour through the grottos. End the day with dinner in Lagos old town.
Ria Formosa Lagoon & Barrier Islands
A full day exploring the Ria Formosa Natural Park — one of Portugal's Seven Natural Wonders — by ferry, kayak and on foot. Take the morning ferry to Ilha Deserta (the most remote barrier island) for a pristine Atlantic beach and the island's single elegant restaurant, then return to Faro for an evening stroll through the old town.
Aljezur & Costa Vicentina Wild Coast
A day on the wild and largely undeveloped Costa Vicentina, starting in the charming Moorish-origin town of Aljezur, then driving the backroads to beaches like Praia da Amoreira (river estuary), Praia de Monte Clérigo and Praia de Arrifana (a spectacular surf beach with clifftop views). A world away from the resort Algarve.
