Benagil Sea Cave

The Benagil Sea Cave, known locally as Algar de Benagil, is the single most photographed natural feature on Portugal's Algarve coast, a sea-carved chamber near the fishing hamlet of Benagil in the municipality of Lagoa. Visitors arrive by small boat, kayak, or stand-up paddleboard and pass through a low sea-level archway into a cathedral-sized cavity with sheer sandstone walls rising around a small crescent of pale sand. Directly overhead, a near-circular opening in the cave roof lets sunlight pour onto the beach and water below, and it is this natural skylight, framed by twisted rock, that makes the cave so distinctive. A visit typically lasts 1.5 to 2 hours including transit time from Benagil, Armação de Pêra, or Portimão marinas, and most operators loop past neighbouring formations such as Algar de Benagil's smaller sister caves before or after the main stop. Since 2024 landing on the internal beach and swimming into the cave from the open water have been restricted by regional authorities to manage erosion and crowding, so the experience is now primarily viewed from a boat, kayak, or paddleboard idling just inside or at the mouth of the cavern. The best light falls through the oculus between roughly 9 and 11am, when the sun angle sends a shaft of light onto the sand below; midday visits see flatter light and the heaviest boat traffic, while approaching from the water in the very early morning offers the calmest seas and fewest other vessels. Photographers favour a position near the cave mouth looking back toward the light shaft, and a wide-angle lens captures both the scale of the rock walls and the glow of the interior. Because access is entirely dependent on calm Atlantic swell, tours can be cancelled or shortened on windy days, particularly in autumn and winter.
