Carvoeiro Village & Cliffs

Carvoeiro is a former fishing village in the municipality of Lagoa, its whitewashed houses climbing the slopes around a compact sandy cove wedged between two limestone headlands, the beach itself framed by seafood restaurants and cafes lining the clifftop above. From the eastern end of the village, a clifftop boardwalk leads to Algar Seco, a striking area of eroded limestone riddled with blowholes, natural chimneys and rock pools, reached via a series of steps and platforms that let visitors look down into the formations from above. A visit combining the village beach and the Algar Seco boardwalk takes about two to three hours, with the walk itself offering repeated viewpoints back over the coastline and out toward the open Atlantic. Late afternoon light brings out the warm tones in the limestone cliffs, particularly along the walk to Algar Seco, making it the preferred time for photography, while mornings offer calmer water in the main cove for swimming. Carvoeiro's popularity peaks sharply in August, when the village and its narrow streets become crowded with holidaymakers; visiting in the shoulder seasons of spring or autumn preserves much of the village's original fishing-town character. Beyond Algar Seco, the boardwalk continues further along the coast to additional viewpoints and small hidden coves, rewarding those who continue past the main formation.
