Cape Spartel is the north-western tip of Africa, a forested headland about 12 kilometres west of central Tangier where the Atlantic Ocean meets the western end of the Strait of Gibraltar. The lighthouse was built in 1864 and was administered by an international commission set up under the Cape Spartel Convention of 1865. The compound is closed to casual entry, but the cliff-top road and viewpoints give wide views over the water, and clear days show the Spanish coast.

A short drive along the headland passes cork oak and pine forest, small seasonal cafes and the road to the Caves of Hercules and Achakar beach. The area is popular with Tangier families at weekends and with taxi tours from the cruise port.
