About Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima
Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima stretches from the Atlantic coast near Larache around the Strait of Gibraltar and along the Mediterranean coast to Al Hoceima, with the Rif mountains rising behind the coast. Tangier, only about 14 km from Spain across the strait, has a hilltop kasbah, the Petit Socco and Grand Socco squares, the Caves of Hercules and the lighthouse headland of Cap Spartel where the Atlantic meets the Mediterranean. An hour south by road, Asilah is a small walled town with Portuguese ramparts and painted murals, and the Roman site of Lixus overlooks the river near Larache. East of Tangier, Tetouan has a whitewashed Andalusian-influenced medina inscribed by UNESCO in 1997, while the Mediterranean resorts of M'diq, Martil, Fnideq and Cabo Negro fill with Moroccan families in summer. In the Rif, Chefchaouen is famed for its blue-painted lanes, and the Talassemtane National Park and Akchour waterfalls offer cedar and fir forest hiking. Far to the east, Al Hoceima National Park protects cliffs and small coves such as Cala Iris. Spanish, Andalusian and Riffian Berber influences shape food, architecture and language across the region.

Getting around Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima
Most visitors arrive at Tangier Ibn Battouta Airport (TNG), on the Al Boraq line at Tangier Ville station, or by ferry from Spain at Tanger Med or Tangier Ville port. From Tangier, CTM and Supratours buses reach Tetouan in about 1 hour to 1 hour 30 minutes and Chefchaouen in about 3 hours to 3 hours 30 minutes (the Tangier bus runs via Tetouan). Shared grand taxis fill the gaps to Asilah, Larache, Fnideq, M'diq, Martil, Akchour and Ouazzane. Al Hoceima is far to the east (roughly 8 hours by road from Tangier) and is best reached by plane, by bus from Chefchaouen, or as a separate leg. A rental car suits the Rif coast and Cala Iris, but mountain roads and police checkpoints need patience.

Best time to visit Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima
Weather through the year in Morocco
Best time Shoulder Worth avoiding
Average daytime temperature in °C. Figures are for Morocco.
Spring has warm days, green mountains and wildflowers around Chefchaouen and Akchour, while September and October still have warm seas and fewer crowds. Winters are rainy and cold at night in the Rif, and Talassemtane trails can be muddy or closed after storms. In summer, the coast catches cooling Atlantic breezes in Tangier and Asilah, while Mediterranean beaches such as M'diq, Martil and Al Hoceima are warm and crowded.
Essential travel tips
- Bargaining is expected in the souks; a common tactic is offering roughly a third to half of the first price and negotiating from there
- Chefchaouen is quietest before 10 am and after 5 pm, when tour groups are absent and light is best for photography
- Fridays see many shops close around midday for prayers, and non-Muslim visitors cannot enter most functioning mosques
- Carry small MAD bills and coins for tips, taxis and small cafes; vendors rarely have change for 200 MAD notes
- Learn a few Spanish phrases: Spanish is widely understood in Tetouan, Chefchaouen and Tangier
- Ramadan shifts opening hours; many restaurants close during the day, but cafes by the sea in tourist towns often remain open
- Book accommodation ahead for July-August on the coast and for weekends in Chefchaouen
Safety information
Keep passports, spare cash and cards in the guesthouse safe and carry only a copy of the passport photo page and the day's cash into the medina.
Carry bags across the body and on the side away from the road to reduce moped bag-snatching in Tangier and Tetouan.
Use petit taxis with working meters, or ask your accommodation to arrange port, airport and station pickups at a fixed price.
Dress modestly, covering shoulders and knees, especially around mosques, souks and residential lanes; this also reduces unsolicited attention.
Download an offline map (Maps.me or Google Maps offline) of the Tangier medina and Chefchaouen before leaving the room, and note the nearest gate to the accommodation, such as Bab el-Ain in Chefchaouen or Bab el-Bahr in Tangier.
If approached by a tout or unofficial guide, a firm and polite 'la, shukran' (no, thank you) repeated calmly is more effective than engaging in conversation.
Never buy, carry or use cannabis or hashish. It is illegal in Morocco and penalties can include fines and prison.
Swim only at beaches with lifeguards or flags in July and August; the Atlantic coast near Asilah, Larache and Cap Spartel has strong currents and drownings occur every year.
Drink bottled or filtered water throughout the stay, since gastrointestinal illness is the most common health complaint among visitors.
Avoid walking alone in poorly lit lanes of the Tangier medina or the Tetouan medina after dark; take a taxi for longer evening journeys.
Report any theft to the police in person and ask for a written report (procès-verbal) for travel insurance.
In winter, check weather and road conditions before driving the mountain roads (N2 and N13 through the Rif); fog, rain and rockfalls are common between November and March.
Use only the official border crossing if visiting the Moroccan side of the Ceuta frontier (Bab Sebta at Fnideq); do not use informal smugglers' paths.
