Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima is the northernmost region of Morocco, where the country meets the Strait of Gibraltar, the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean. It combines the port city of Tangier and its Cap Spartel headland, the white-walled UNESCO medina of Tetouan, the blue-washed mountain town of Chefchaouen, the mural-covered Atlantic town of Asilah, the Mediterranean beaches of M'diq, Martil and Al Hoceima, and the wooded Rif mountains of Talassemtane National Park.

Day trip tips
Make the most of your excursions.
Leave Tangier by 08:30 for Chefchaouen so you can return before dark; the last buses and taxis thin out in the evening.
Carry cash in small dirham notes; shared taxis, cafes and site ticket windows outside Tangier rarely take cards.
Shared grand taxis leave only when full (usually six passengers); expect a wait or pay for empty seats to leave sooner.
Mobile coverage is patchy in the Rif; download offline maps for Chefchaouen, Akchour and the Al Hoceima coast.
For Akchour, arrange the return taxi before starting the hike and bring water and sturdy shoes.
Tetouan, M'diq and Martil beaches are packed in August; weekdays in June or September are far quieter.
Al Hoceima coast trips (Cala Iris, Badis) need a rental car or chartered taxi; there is no scheduled public transport to the coves.
Dress modestly in Ouazzane, Tetouan and Chefchaouen; carry a light layer in spring and autumn because the mountains are cooler than the coast.
Emergency numbers in Morocco are 19 (police), 177 (rural gendarmerie) and 15 (ambulance and civil protection).
