Shibu Onsen Matsuya Ryokan is a traditional inn in the Shibu Onsen hot spring district of Yamanouchi, Shimotakai-gun, roughly 3 km from Yudanaka Station on the Nagano Electric Railway and approximately 50 km from Nagano City by car via Route 292. The Shibu Onsen district is among Japan's best-preserved hot spring villages, characterised by narrow stone-paved lanes, wooden storefronts dating to the Taisho and early Showa periods, and a network of nine public communal baths known collectively as the sotoyumeguri circuit, which registered inn guests may access on a self-guided walk using a wooden key given at check-in. Matsuya occupies a multi-storey timber building on one of the main lanes; its exterior carries the ochre and dark-wood tones characteristic of the district's architectural palette. Guest rooms are in tatami format with futon bedding arranged nightly; some rooms have views over the lane while others face a small inner garden. Evening meals served in-room or in a shared dining room emphasise local mountain produce: wild sansai mountain vegetables, Shinshu salmon from highland aquaculture, Yamanouchi mushrooms in season, and locally-brewed sake. Breakfasts are traditional washoku with miso, grilled fish, pickles, and rice. Both indoor and outdoor baths use Shibu Onsen's sodium-chloride hot spring waters, which are moderately alkaline and reported to benefit skin condition. No pool or gym is offered. The proprietors speak Japanese and can arrange guided walks on the nine-bath circuit and coordinate day trips to Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park, approximately 40 minutes on foot or 10 minutes by taxi. The inn suits couples and individual travellers.

Tips for visiting
- The nine-bath circuit (sotoyumeguri) is most enjoyable in the late afternoon before dinner and the early morning before breakfast — both quieter than midday hours
- Bath number 9 (Soto-yu) near the top of the village is the most secluded and least visited; start there and work downhill
- The stone lanes of Shibu Onsen are steep and uneven in places — guests with mobility concerns should mention this at booking so the inn can suggest lower-gradient routes
- Snow Monkey Park visits are busiest 9:00 am–1:00 pm; an early morning departure from the inn before breakfast allows a less crowded visit to the park before most day-trippers arrive
- The Nagano Electric Railway's Yudanaka Line runs until around 9:00 pm; guests arriving from Nagano should plan to reach Yudanaka Station before then to avoid relying solely on taxis
