Nozawa Onsen Nakaiya

Nozawa Onsen Nakaiya is a family-operated ryokan in the centre of Nozawa Onsen village, Shimotakai-gun, approximately 80 km northeast of Nagano City by road and 20 minutes by shuttle from Togari-Nozawaonsen Station on the JR Iiyama Line. The inn occupies a traditional wooden townhouse on one of the village's lantern-lit lanes, within easy walking distance of the Ogama communal outdoor bath — the village's most prominent free public soaking pool — and several of the 13 other free public hot spring facilities that are the defining feature of life in Nozawa Onsen. The building's exterior shows weathered timber characteristic of the village vernacular; interior spaces include a small lobby with a reception hearth, a communal dining room, and guest rooms spread across upper floors. Room configurations cover traditional tatami rooms with futon sleeping and a small number of Western-bed options. Two-meal plans including dinner and breakfast are standard. The kitchen centres its menu on local mountain produce: nozawana pickled greens — a regional speciality grown and prepared in the village and protected by agricultural designation — alongside grilled river fish, seasonal mushroom dishes, and locally-brewed sake. An in-house onsen bath segregated by gender uses the village's sodium-chloride hot spring waters and is available each morning and evening. No gym, pool, or spa services are offered beyond the in-house communal bath and free access to the village's public facilities. The innkeepers speak Japanese; basic English is available at check-in. The inn suits ski season visitors to Nozawa Onsen Ski Resort — one of Japan's most celebrated ski areas for natural snow depth — and summer hikers exploring the Madarao and Kenashi highland trail networks.
