Bettei Senjuan

Bettei Senjuan (別邸仙壽庵) is a boutique luxury ryokan in the Hirao district of Yamanouchi, Shimotakai-gun, sitting at around 850 metres elevation amid cedar forest and natural hot spring terrain. The property lies approximately 2 km on foot from the Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park entrance and 30 minutes by bus from Yudanaka Station on the Nagano Electric Railway, which connects to Nagano City in 45 minutes. The ryokan's architecture draws on sukiya-zukuri craftsmanship — low-slung timber eaves, raked gravel pathways, and interior shoji screens that dissolve the boundary between room and garden. Twelve suites each feature a private or semi-private rotenburo (outdoor hot spring bath) fed by the property's own spring source, with tatami floors, futon bedding arranged by staff each evening, and seasonal décor curated by an in-house ikebana practitioner. Multi-course kaiseki dinners, served in-room or in a private dining alcove, showcase mountain vegetables, local river fish such as iwana char, and Shinshu wagyu beef from Nagano's highland farms. Morning breakfast follows a lighter washoku format with house-made miso, rice porridge, and pickled vegetables. The property does not maintain a gym or pool but offers in-room shiatsu massage on request and guided nature walks through the surrounding forest with the concierge during spring and autumn foliage seasons. Staff communicate in Japanese and basic English, and the inn caters primarily to couples and solo travellers seeking immersive quiet retreat in one of Japan's most prized onsen landscapes.
