Matsumoto Castle City

Matsumoto City lies about 60 km south of Nagano City and is reached most directly by the JR Shinonoi Line, either a Limited Express Shinano service (about 35 minutes) or local trains (up to 55 minutes), with fares ranging from roughly 970 to 2,160 yen depending on train type; a Highway Bus alternative takes about 1.5 hours and costs around 1,100 yen round trip. The train arrives directly at Matsumoto Station, from which the city's main sights are within easy walking distance. The centerpiece is Matsumoto Castle, one of Japan's original wooden castle keeps and a National Treasure, its black-and-white walls reflected in the surrounding moat; the castle's steep interior staircases and low doorways preserve original 16th-century construction. A typical itinerary starts with a morning visit to the castle grounds and keep, allowing an hour to explore the interior and view the surrounding Japan Alps from the top floor. From there, travelers can walk 10-15 minutes to Nakamachi Street, a preserved district of white-walled kura (storehouses) now housing craft shops, cafes, and sake breweries, suited to a midday lunch of Shinshu soba or horumon (grilled offal) at a local restaurant. The afternoon can include the Matsumoto City Museum of Art, home to a permanent Yayoi Kusama collection, or a stroll along the Metoba River through the Nawate Street market lane, known for frog-themed folk crafts and street snacks. Matsumoto is a year-round destination: cherry blossoms frame the castle in late March to April, and winter brings a striking contrast of black castle walls against snow-capped Alps in the background. Arriving in the morning avoids the midday crowds at the castle ticket gates, particularly during peak cherry blossom and summer holiday weeks. Restaurants and cafes cluster around Nakamachi and Nawate streets, making food easy to find throughout the day without needing to plan stops along the route.
