Kamikochi Alpine Valley

Kamikochi is a highland valley in the Hida Mountains within Matsumoto City, Nagano, reached via a two-stage rail-and-bus journey rather than direct road (private cars are banned to protect the valley). From Matsumoto, travelers take a local train on the Matsumoto Dentetsu Kamikochi Line to Shinshimashima (about 30 minutes), then transfer to an Alpico Kotsu bus that climbs roughly 60 minutes into the valley, arriving at the Kappa-bashi (Kappa Bridge) bus terminal; the full one-way trip runs about two hours from central Matsumoto. Because bus reservations must be booked separately in each direction and round-trip tickets aren't sold, travelers should reserve both legs online in advance, especially during the July-August and autumn foliage peaks. Once in the valley, the walking loop around Taisho Pond, Kappa Bridge, and Myojin Pond offers flat, well-maintained trails suitable for a half-day or full-day itinerary. A typical morning arrival plan starts at Taisho Pond, continuing along the Azusa River to Kappa Bridge for lunch-hour views of Mt. Hotaka, then on to Myojin Pond and the Hotaka Shrine in the afternoon before catching a return bus in late afternoon. Fit hikers can extend to Tokusawa for a longer riverside walk. The valley is only open from late April through mid-November, since heavy snow closes the road in winter; late spring brings snowmelt streams and fresh green, while October offers golden larch and beech foliage. Food options are limited to a handful of lodges and huts near Kappa Bridge, including cafes and simple soba or curry-rice stands; travelers should bring water and snacks for trail sections beyond the bridge. Rest facilities and toilets are concentrated near the bus terminal, Kappa Bridge, and Myojin. Arriving on the first buses of the morning helps avoid midday crowds at the bridge and secures better light for photography of the Hotaka range reflected in the river.
