Karuizawa Resort Town

Karuizawa is a resort town in Kita-Saku District, about 30 km east of Nagano City, reached in about 18 minutes by the Hokuriku Shinkansen from Nagano Station, with a round-trip fare of roughly 3,240 yen; the shinkansen makes this one of the fastest day trips available from Nagano, arriving directly at Karuizawa Station in the town center. Lunch options cluster around Kyu-Karuizawa Ginza and the Karuizawa Prince Shopping Plaza near the station, which also offers a broader range of outlet shopping for an afternoon stop before the return train. Karuizawa's high elevation (around 1,000 meters) makes it a popular summer escape from Tokyo's heat, with average summer temperatures noticeably cooler than the lowlands; October brings vivid foliage around Shiraito Falls and the surrounding forest trails, while the Christmas season draws visitors for seasonal illuminations and market stalls. Arriving on a weekday helps avoid the heaviest crowds, since Karuizawa is a popular weekend and holiday destination for travelers from Tokyo given the shinkansen's speed.
