Obuse Historic Town & Hokusai Museum

Obuse is a compact historic town in the Kamitakai District of Nagano Prefecture, about 20 km north of Nagano City. The most direct approach is the Nagano Dentetsu (Nagaden) line from Nagano Station to Obuse Station, a ride of roughly 40 minutes that also passes rice paddies and orchards; the town center is a five-minute walk from the station platform. Because the historic quarter is walkable and flat, no additional transport is needed once travelers arrive. The town's central attraction is the Hokusai Museum, which holds works by the ukiyo-e artist Katsushika Hokusai, who spent his final years in Obuse under the patronage of local merchant Takai Kozan; the museum's most famous pieces are two painted festival float ceilings, Phoenix and Dragon and Wave. Adjacent to the museum, the cobblestone lanes around the Takai Kozan Memorial Museum showcase Edo-period merchant architecture, sake breweries, and chestnut confectionery shops. A typical day begins with a mid-morning visit to the Hokusai Museum, followed by a stroll through the lantern-lined lanes to sample chestnut sweets (kuri, a local specialty) at shops such as Obuse-do or Chikufu-do, and a light lunch of soba or chestnut rice at a nearby restaurant. Afternoons can include the nearby Ganshoin Temple, home to a striking ceiling dragon painting attributed to Hokusai, a short taxi or bus ride from the town center. Obuse is pleasant year-round, but the town is especially busy in September and October when chestnut season peaks and shops sell fresh kuri-related sweets and marron products; cherry blossoms in April and clear autumn light in November also suit photography. Arriving before 10 a.m. avoids the midday coach-tour crowds that gather around the museum and main street. Food options are concentrated on the main pedestrian street, including cafes serving chestnut parfaits and traditional teahouses; there are few dining options outside this core area, so travelers should plan meals within the historic district.
