The terraces of Piazza Walther are the social heart of evening Bolzano, where the cafés and bars lining the city's elegant main square set out tables for aperitivo as the day cools. Named after the medieval poet Walther von der Vogelweide, whose statue stands at its centre, the square in South Tyrol is framed by pastel façades and the Gothic cathedral, making it the prime place to sit out with a drink and watch the city pass. The crowd is broad and cosmopolitan: locals meeting after work, families, older couples and tourists, with a generally relaxed, well-dressed but unfussy feel. There is no formal dress code, though the square's polish encourages smart-casual attire. The drinks revolve around the regional aperitivo staples — the local Hugo (elderflower, prosecco and mint), Aperol and Campari spritzes, regional wines by the glass and coffee — typically priced around €5–8 for a spritz or Hugo, in line with a prime-square setting. Music is incidental, drifting from individual venues rather than programmed. Opening hours are long and daytime-led, running roughly daily from 08:00 to midnight, with the aperitivo window from about 18:00 the liveliest stretch; weekend evenings draw the biggest crowds, while weeknights remain pleasant and less pressed. There is no cover charge or bottle service — this is a square of café terraces rather than clubs — and seating is generally first-come, though the most popular terraces fill on warm evenings. Piazza Walther is also the stage for the city's events through the year, most famously the Bolzano Christmas market in Advent, when the square is transformed with wooden stalls and lights. For a first orientation to the city or a relaxed drink in handsome surroundings, the Piazza Walther terraces are the obvious and rewarding choice in central Bolzano.
