Get the best deals and avoid common mistakes.
Book far in advance — three to six months or more — for the Christmas and February ski weeks and for August hiking, when Val Gardena, Alta Badia, and Madonna di Campiglio sell out and minimum stays apply.
The shoulder seasons of late May to June and September to early October bring open mountain huts, lower rates, and the best hiking weather without the high-season crowds.
Many Dolomite resort hotels close in the shoulder months between roughly mid-April and late May and again from November to early December, so confirm seasonal opening dates outside the two main seasons.
Half-board (mezza pensione) is the norm at alpine hotels and usually represents excellent value, as the multi-course dinner is part of the experience.
Use Bolzano, Trento, or Merano as a year-round base — all have train stations, hotels open in every season, and good onward connections into the valleys.
South Tyrol's bilingual culture means hotels carry both Italian and German names (Bolzano/Bozen, Bressanone/Brixen, Val Gardena/Gröden); search under both spellings for the best rates.
