The Seceda to Col Raiser ridge walk crosses some of the most celebrated scenery in the Dolomites, the dramatic tilted Seceda ridgeline and the saw-toothed Geisler (Odle) peaks of the Puez-Odle Nature Park above Val Gardena in Alto Adige.

One of the most photographed ridgelines in the Dolomites, the jagged Geisler/Odle peaks rising like a knife-edge above green pastures. From the Seceda cable car top station, an easy ridge walk crosses meadows beneath the spires and descends past refuges to the Col Raiser gondola.

The route is an easy-to-moderate point-to-point of roughly 9 kilometres with around 300 metres of climbing and 600 metres of descent, made gentle by cable-car access at both ends: the Funivia Seceda lifts walkers from Ortisei to the 2,500-metre top station, and the Col Raiser gondola returns them to Santa Cristina at the finish, from where Val Gardena buses link the valley villages. From the Seceda summit, the path follows the open ridge beneath the Odle spires, crossing high alpine meadows grazed by cattle, with the famous angled rock wall rising on one side and rolling green pastures falling away on the other. The walking is straightforward on clear, well-marked paths, with no scrambling, making it suitable for most active walkers and families. Several mountain refuges and malghe (alpine dairies) along the route serve South Tyrolean specialities such as speck, mountain cheese, barley soup and kaiserschmarrn, so the walk doubles as a gentle food tour. The descent toward Col Raiser passes through larch and pine before reaching the gondola. Because both ends are lift-served, the day involves far less effort than the views suggest, though sturdy footwear and a windproof layer are still needed on the exposed ridge. The season runs from mid-June to mid-October, with late September bringing golden larches and the clearest light. With minimal climbing, refuge food and one of the most iconic skylines in the Alps, the Seceda ridge is among the most rewarding easy-to-moderate hikes in the Dolomites.

Frequently asked questions

How much climbing is involved?

Very little. Cable cars at both ends mean the route involves only about 300 metres of gentle climbing along the ridge, with the longer descent taken on the Col Raiser gondola.

Is it suitable for families?

Yes. The paths are clear and well marked with no scrambling, and the refuges along the way make it an enjoyable outing for families with older children.

Where can I eat on the route?

Several refuges and malghe serve South Tyrolean food such as speck, mountain cheese and kaiserschmarrn, so it is easy to combine the walk with a mountain lunch.

When is the best time to go?

Mid-June to mid-October. Late September is especially fine, with golden larches, stable weather and quieter trails after the summer peak.
