A famous balcony trail (path 601) running along a grassy ridge with a continuous head-on view of the Marmolada, the highest peak in the Dolomites, and its glacier. The Viel del Pan is one of the easiest ways to enjoy truly spectacular high-mountain panoramas, with a refuge midway.
The Viel del Pan (Bindelweg), path 601, is one of the most rewarding panoramic walks in the Dolomites, a gentle balcony trail that runs along a grassy ridge with an uninterrupted head-on view of the Marmolada, the highest peak in the range, and its shrinking glacier. The route is an easy-to-moderate point-to-point of roughly 8 kilometres with only around 250 metres of climbing, starting from Passo Pordoi at 2,239 metres near Canazei in Val di Fassa, reached by car or Dolomiti Bus, and finishing at Passo Fedaia beside Lake Fedaia, with a bus linking the two passes. From Pordoi the path contours along the open ridge, the Marmolada and its glacier filling the view ahead across the Fedaia valley, while the Sella and Sassolungo groups rise behind. The terrain is easy graded grassy path with no scrambling or exposure, making it one of the simplest ways to enjoy genuinely spectacular high-mountain scenery, suitable for most walkers and families. Roughly midway, Rifugio Viel del Pan and Rifugio Fredarola serve South Tyrolean and Trentino mountain food, a fine lunch stop with the glacier in view. The optional Sass Pordoi cable car from Passo Pordoi adds a dramatic summit detour to over 2,950 metres for those wanting more. The walk is exposed to wind and sun on the open ridge, so a windproof layer and sun protection are wise even on warm days. The trail finishes at the Fedaia dam and lake, from where the return bus runs to Canazei and Pordoi. The season runs from late June to early October. Walking from Pordoi toward Fedaia keeps the Marmolada in front the whole way, the finest direction. With minimal effort, refuge food and one of the great mountain panoramas of the Alps, the Viel del Pan is among the most enjoyable easy-to-moderate walks in the Dolomites.
