Renon / Ritten Panorama Trail (Freud Promenade)

The Renon (Ritten) panorama trail is a gentle, sunny walk across the high plateau that rises above Bolzano, offering a continuous view of the Dolomite peaks for very little effort, making it one of the most accessible scenic walks in Alto Adige. The classic route is the Freud Promenade, an easy point-to-point of about 6.5 kilometres with only around 150 metres of climbing, linking the plateau villages of Soprabolzano (Oberbozen) and Collalbo (Klobenstein), reached by the Renon cable car from Bolzano and the historic narrow-gauge Renon railway that still trundles between the villages. The path, named for Sigmund Freud who holidayed here, contours along the sunny plateau with the jagged Catinaccio (Rosengarten) and Latemar massifs filling the southern horizon and the Sciliar rising beyond. The terrain is easy graded panorama path and gravel track with no difficulty, suitable for families, older walkers and anyone wanting a relaxed half-day, and the vintage train allows the walk to be shortened or the return made by rail. Near Collalbo, a short detour reaches the Renon earth pyramids, dramatic clay erosion spires each capped by a balancing boulder, among the finest examples of the formation in Europe. The plateau is mild and sunny by Dolomite standards, enjoyable from spring through late autumn, with the season running roughly April to November, far longer than the high-mountain trails. Cafes and South Tyrolean inns in the villages make refreshment easy. Because the walk is low-altitude, sheltered and lift-and-rail served, it is an ideal choice for a gentle day, a poor-weather alternative to the high peaks, or an outing with children. With its sweeping Dolomite panorama, historic transport and the curious earth pyramids nearby, the Renon plateau offers a relaxed and rewarding walk above Bolzano.
