Sea Kayaking the Cinque Terre Coast

Sea kayaking along the Cinque Terre coast is a guided paddling excursion through the protected waters of the Cinque Terre National Park and its marine area in Liguria, north-west Italy. Routes link the cliff-perched villages of Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore, threading past terraced vineyards, sea caves and coves that can only be reached from the water. Tours are run by established local outfitters such as Outdoor Portofino, Arba Spinta in Riomaggiore and Carnassa Trek & Sup in Monterosso, whose instructors hold Italian sea-kayak and rescue qualifications and brief every group before launch. The activity suits beginners and families: no prior experience is required, most operators set a minimum age of around 8 for accompanied children, and participants should be comfortable in open water and able to swim. Stable sit-on-top and touring kayaks, a buoyancy aid and a dry bag are provided; participants bring swimwear, a sun hat, reef shoes and reef-safe sunscreen. A typical half-day guided trip lasts three to four hours and covers six to twelve kilometres of coast, with stops to swim and snorkel in sheltered bays. The pre-paddle safety briefing covers paddle technique, group spacing, weather signals and what to do in a capsize; guides carry radios or phones and a tow line, and groups stay within reach of the shore so that an unwell or tired paddler can be escorted back or recovered by the support boat some operators run. The best season runs from May to October, when the Ligurian Sea is warm and calm; morning departures are favoured because afternoon thermal winds and swell can build quickly along this exposed coast. Outings are weather-dependent and cancelled or rescheduled when the sea is rough, so flexible plans help. Paddling close under the cliffs gives a perspective on the famous villages that walkers on the Sentiero Azzurro never see, and the marine-protected status keeps the water clear and the wildlife — from peregrine falcons overhead to fish below — abundant.
