Paragliding over the Riviera

Paragliding over the Riviera is a tandem flight from the hills above Sestri Levante and the Tigullio gulf on the Ligurian coast of north-west Italy, where a pilot and passenger launch on foot from a hillside take-off and soar above olive terraces, pine woods and the sea. From altitude the view opens across the Gulf of Genoa, the twin bays of Sestri Levante and, on clear days, north to the Maritime Alps. Tandem flying is the accessible entry to the sport: no experience, licence or training is required of the passenger, who is clipped into a harness in front of an experienced pilot and simply takes a few running steps at launch and landing. Flights in Liguria are operated by FIVL-affiliated tandem schools and pilots — FIVL being the Italian free-flight federation that licenses instructors and tandem ratings. Operators typically set a minimum age of around 5 to 8 with parental consent and accept passengers across a broad weight range, usually roughly 25 to 100 kilograms; people with back, heart or recent-injury concerns should check first. The tandem wing, harness and helmet are provided, so participants only bring closed sturdy shoes, a warm layer because air is cooler aloft, and sunglasses. A booking usually runs two to three hours including transfer to the launch site and the wait for the right window, with about 15 to 30 minutes actually airborne depending on conditions. Before take-off the pilot gives a safety briefing on the launch run, body position, what to hold and the landing, carries a reserve parachute and radio, and chooses the launch and landing fields and, in calm conditions, a gentle descent plan. Paragliding depends entirely on the weather: smooth flights need light, steady wind and good visibility, so the season runs roughly April to October and flights are postponed in rain, strong or gusty wind, or low cloud. Early morning and late afternoon often bring the calmest, most scenic air. Soaring silently above one of Italy's most beautiful coastlines makes this a standout half-day for the adventurous and the curious alike.
