Diving the Christ of the Abyss at San Fruttuoso

Diving the Christ of the Abyss is a scuba excursion in the Portofino Marine Protected Area on the Ligurian coast of north-west Italy, descending to the bronze Cristo degli Abissi statue that stands on the seabed of San Fruttuoso bay at about 17 metres. Cast in 1954 and lowered with arms raised toward the surface, the statue is one of the Mediterranean's most photographed underwater sites and a memorial to those lost at sea. Dive centres such as Diving Group Portofino, Portofino Divers and B&B Diving Center in Santa Margherita Ligure run boat trips from Camogli and Santa Margherita Ligure into the protected zone, where permits and a qualified divemaster are required. The dive suits certified divers from open-water level upward; the statue sits within recreational depth, but currents and boat traffic mean it is a guided dive, not a solo one. Non-divers and children are not left out — operators offer snorkel and freedive viewing of the statue from the surface, which is visible in clear conditions. Participants need a valid certification card and logbook; full scuba kit and a 5-to-7-millimetre wetsuit can be rented, as the water stays cool even in summer. A typical outing is a half-day boat trip with around 30 to 45 minutes of bottom time, often paired with a second dive on the reef walls draped in red gorgonian sea fans, where groupers, moray eels and octopus are common. The pre-dive briefing covers the dive plan, depth and time limits, hand signals, buddy checks and lost-diver and emergency-ascent procedures; centres carry oxygen and first aid, brief the nearest recompression facility and follow the marine-park rules that protect the site. The best season is May to October, when visibility and sea temperature peak; diving is avoided in rough seas or strong south-easterly winds that stir up the bay. Reaching San Fruttuoso only by boat or on foot keeps the cove tranquil, and surfacing beside the medieval abbey on the shingle beach makes the trip as memorable above water as below.
