Cycling — Valle d'Itria Trulli Trail

Cycling the Valle d'Itria Trulli Trail is one of the most rewarding ways to experience the heart of Puglia, the rolling limestone valley between the trulli towns of Alberobello, Locorotondo, Cisternino and Martina Franca in central Italy. The classic 50 km loop starts from Piazza del Popolo in Alberobello and threads along quiet country lanes lined with dry-stone walls, olive groves, vineyards and the conical-roofed trulli that give the valley its character, including the UNESCO World Heritage trulli district of Alberobello itself. Bike, hybrid and e-bike hire is available from Ciclotravel Alberobello on Via Indipendenza and from Puglia Bike, typically costing €15–25 (~$16–27) per day and including a helmet; free route maps are available from the Alberobello tourist office. The terrain is gently rolling rather than steep, so the ride suits anyone with moderate fitness, and an e-bike makes the full circuit accessible to almost everyone. The route can also be shortened to link just two or three towns. Riders should carry at least two litres of water, sun protection and a basic repair kit, as shade and services are limited between villages. The best months are April to June and September to October, when temperatures are pleasant and the countryside is green or busy with the grape and olive harvest; July and August can be uncomfortably hot, especially in the exposed midday hours, so early starts are wise. Parts of the route follow signed cycle ways, but a map or GPS is recommended as waymarking is intermittent. Operators can supply guided rides, luggage transfers and e-bike support for those who prefer not to self-organise. The whitewashed hilltop village of Locorotondo, the balconied lanes of Cisternino and the Baroque centre of Martina Franca all make natural stops for an espresso or lunch, and the trulli of Alberobello are unmissable at the start or finish of the loop.
