Cliff Diving — Polignano Red Bull Competition Site

Cliff diving at Polignano a Mare centres on the Cala Porto inlet, where the whitewashed old town of this Puglian seaside village rises straight from the Adriatic. The setting is best known as a stop on the Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series, which usually visits in September and sees professional athletes leap from a temporary 27 m platform high above the cove. For most travellers this is a spectator event: viewing from the Lama Monachile bridge, the Cala Porto beach and the clifftop terraces is free, and the natural amphitheatre of cliffs gives superb vantage points. Outside the competition, the lower natural ledges of roughly 5–8 m above the sea are used informally by confident local jumpers and visitors. There is no organised operator and no supervision for this casual jumping; it is entirely at the individual's own risk and demands strong swimming ability, prior experience entering water from height, and careful judgement of depth, tide and submerged rocks. Sea conditions change quickly: a flat morning can turn choppy by afternoon, and swell makes the inlet hazardous. Participants should never jump alone, never after drinking alcohol, and should always check the entry zone for swimmers and rocks beforehand. Water shoes help on the rough limestone, and swimwear is the only essential kit. The warmest and calmest window is July and August, when the sea is around 25 °C, though this is also when the cove is busiest. The cliffs face roughly east, so morning light is best for photography of both the divers and the dramatic townscape. Cliff diving here pairs naturally with sea kayaking and swimming in the same cove, and the clifftop old town offers cafés and viewpoints for those who prefer to watch rather than jump.
