Horse Riding — Murge Plateau

Horse riding on the Murge plateau explores the wild, open uplands of the Alta Murgia in northern Puglia, the rugged limestone tableland around Andria famous for the octagonal Castel del Monte, the medieval fortress built by Emperor Frederick II. Guided trail rides run by Centro Ippico Il Cavallino, a family-run stables on Strada Castel del Monte near Andria, head out across rolling pasture, sheep tracks, scrubland and quiet farm lanes, with the castle often visible on the horizon. Rides range from gentle two-hour outings to full-day excursions covering 8–25 km, and the centre matches horses to ability so that complete beginners as well as experienced riders are catered for. No previous experience is needed for the shorter rides: a guide leads the group at a walk and easy trot throughout, and the calm, well-schooled horses make the activity suitable for nervous first-timers and, on the gentlest rides, for older children who can follow instructions. Helmets are provided; riders must wear long trousers and sturdy closed-toe shoes, and should bring sun protection and water, especially on longer rides. A short briefing covers mounting, basic control of the horse, and group spacing before setting off. The best months are April to June and September to October, when the plateau is carpeted with wildflowers in spring or bathed in soft autumn light and the temperatures are comfortable; high summer can be very hot and exposed on the open Murgia, so rides are often scheduled for the cooler early morning or late afternoon. Full-day excursions with picnic stops should be booked ahead so arrangements can be made. The ride pairs naturally with a visit to Castel del Monte and the wider Alta Murgia National Park, offering a peaceful, scenic way to experience one of Puglia's least-developed landscapes.
