An 18th-century water palace that appears to float in Man Sagar Lake, with the Nahargarh hills behind.
Jal Mahal is a sandstone palace built into Man Sagar Lake, with four of its five floors underwater when the lake is full. It is closed to visitors, so photography is from the promenade on the Amer road, where handlers with camels and horse carts add foreground. The lake changes colour with the seasons, and the cleanest water is after the monsoon. Sunrise offers soft pink light and few people, while sunset silhouettes the palace against the Nahargarh hills. A long lens compresses the palace and the hills, and a wide lens catches the promenade and its pavilions. The promenade is free to enter.
