A 1424 congregational mosque with a forest of over 250 pillars in its prayer hall and a large courtyard with a central ablution tank. Soft shafts of light between columns give strong architectural images.
The Jama Masjid of Ahmedabad was built in 1424 by Sultan Ahmed Shah and is one of the largest mosques of its period in western India. Its prayer hall contains a rhythmic forest of pillars and the courtyard holds an ablution tank and carved arches. The classic image is the repeating columns shot from the entrance, and the courtyard with its yellow sandstone arches suits centred compositions. Visitors remove shoes and dress modestly, and non-Muslim visitors may be restricted at prayer times and on Fridays around midday. Photography inside the prayer hall may be limited and permission should be sought at the entrance. The mosque forms the end of the old city heritage walk and sits beside the Manek Chowk market, so a morning of architecture and market photography can be combined.
