Adalaj Stepwell, also called Adalaj ni Vav, is a five-level stepwell in Adalaj village about 19 km north of Ahmedabad, built in 1499 for the memory of Queen Rudabai's husband. Descending the flights of steps takes a visitor into a cool, carved sandstone chamber with pillared landings and elaborately carved niches. The principal photograph is looking up the central octagonal shaft, where a beam of sun falls on the steps in late morning.

Wide-angle lenses handle the tight spaces, and the symmetry of the pillars rewards centred compositions. Timings are listed as roughly 8:00AM to 6:00PM and entry is reported as free for visitors, though this should be confirmed. The site is popular with school groups and families at weekends, so weekday mornings give emptier frames.
