A shallow freshwater reservoir built in 1912 and declared a bird sanctuary in 1988, with flat embankment and shoreline paths for birdwatching walks. It is the easiest nature outing from Ahmedabad and is best from November to February when migratory waterbirds arrive.
Thol Lake is an artificial irrigation tank of roughly 700 hectares in the flat farmland of Mehsana District, about 25 to 40 km north-west of Ahmedabad depending on the route and the source. The sanctuary is a walk rather than a hike: paths follow the embankment and the marshy edges where species including flamingos, sarus cranes, greater white pelicans and many ducks gather in winter, with roughly 150 to 160 bird species recorded. There is almost no shade and no sustained gradient, so effort is minimal but the sun is strong by mid-morning. A forest department fee is normally charged at the gate, and rates and opening hours change, so they should be confirmed before travel. Local boatmen operate some small boat rides, subject to water levels. There are few facilities at the lake beyond basic stalls, so food and water should be carried in from Ahmedabad or Kadi.
