Gujarat's largest wetland bird sanctuary, a Ramsar-listed lake and marsh of about 121 square km. Visitors walk the shoreline near the gate and go out on country boats through reed beds, so it is a nature outing rather than a hike.
Nal Sarovar lies roughly 64 km west of Ahmedabad and was declared a bird sanctuary in 1969 and a Ramsar site in 2012. The lake covers about 121 square km of shallow water and marsh dotted with small islets, and more than 200 bird species are recorded, including flamingos, pelicans, storks, herons and many ducks in winter. There is no hiking as such: visitors walk along the shore near the sanctuary gate and take flat-bottomed country boats poled by local boatmen through the reed channels. The sanctuary is normally open from about 6:00AM to 5:30PM, an entry and camera fee is charged, and boat rates are set out on a board at the gate. The best time is just before sunrise, when the water is calm. An interpretation centre called Abhiruchi Kendra introduces easily seen species. The setting is exposed, with almost no shade, and services are limited, so water and food should be brought.
