The only natural freshwater lake on Crete, with pedalos, swimming and mountain views.
Lake Kournas is the only natural freshwater lake in Crete, set beneath the White Mountains about 47 km east of Chania near the coastal village of Georgioupoli. The lake is about 1 km across, ringed by hills and has green-blue water that is cool and clean enough for swimming. Pedalos and canoes are available for hire, tavernas sit on the shore and the lake is a popular half-day trip with children. Turtles and water birds can be seen in the reeds. Visitors can combine it with the beach at Georgioupoli, 3 km away, and the tree-lined road to the village. The best time to visit is spring or autumn, when the lake is quieter.
