The Croix-des-Gardes is a wooded hill of about 164 m on the western edge of Cannes, in the Alpes-Maritimes department of France, whose public park offers the best free panorama of the bay. Paths of 2 to 3 km wind uphill through Aleppo pine, holm oak, mimosa and Mediterranean scrub to a viewing platform marked by a cross, from where the Lérins Islands, the Croisette, the Esterel massif and, in clear weather, Cap d'Antibes can be seen. The climb is gentle, with some stony sections. The park is signed from Chemin des Collines and Avenue Maurice Chevalier, and parking is available near the entrance. It is popular with local joggers, so early morning is quiet. Dogs on leads are accepted, and fire risk rules apply in summer.
