The Pic du Cap Roux, at 452 m, is one of the classic hikes of the Esterel massif, west of Cannes. From the Col de Belle Barbe, the trail climbs through cork oak and maritime pine to a plateau and the small hermitage chapel of Saint-Honorat-de-l'Esterel, then continues over bare porphyry rock to the summit, whose red volcanic crags give the massif its colour. The summit gives a wide view of the coast from Cap d'Antibes to the Maures. The full route is around 9 km return with a climb of about 450 m and takes 4 to 5 hours. The path is rocky and exposed, so sun, wind and loose stones are the main hazards. From July to September the prefectures close or restrict access to forest massifs on high fire-risk days, so conditions must be checked daily.
