A car-free island loop through the botanical garden to Fort Royal for a city panorama.
Lokrum is a small, car-free island nature reserve about 600 m off the Old Town of Dubrovnik, in southern Croatia, criss-crossed by shaded walking paths that lead to Fort Royal, the French fortress completed in 1806 at the island's high point. Access is by ferry from Luža pier in the Old Port; the crossing takes about 15 minutes and boats run every 15-30 minutes between roughly 09:00 and 19:00 from June to September. An adult return is EUR 30 (~$34.50), a child aged 7-18 pays EUR 5 (~$5.75), and children under 7 travel free. Visitors cannot stay overnight, so the last boat back, about 19:00 in high season, sets the schedule.
The main circuit is about 4.6 km, with 6-7 km of paths in total, and takes 1.5-2 hours; shorter signed walks of 30-90 minutes are available. Technically it is easy, with only a short climb over rocky steps to Fort Royal. Surfaces are a mix of paved lanes, packed dirt and limestone steps, and the interior is shaded by Aleppo pine, holm oak and olive trees, while coastal sections have little cover. The route passes the former Benedictine monastery and its botanical garden, where peacocks roam and where a replica of the Iron Throne from the Game of Thrones series is displayed, and also reaches the Dead Sea, a small saltwater lake linked to the open water.
From Fort Royal, the high point, a panorama stretches over the Old Town walls, Dubrovnik's coast and the Elafiti Islands, and the fort building has a small cafe. Reasonable turn-around points are the monastery complex for a short outing, or the fort for the full loop. Drinking water, a restaurant and a cafe are available near the landing and the monastery, but shops are limited, so carry a bottle for the walk. Rocky coves along the shore allow swimming after the hike.
