Zhifu Island is a rocky former island now permanently connected to the Yantai mainland by a natural sand spit -- a tombolo -- north of the downtown core, and it gives the city its district name (Zhifu). Visitors walk or drive across the sand spit, which is flanked by beaches on both sides, to reach the island's low hills, fishing hamlet and small marine ranch where mussels, oysters and sea cucumbers are farmed in shallow coastal pens.

Walking trails circle the island's rocky shoreline, passing weathered granite outcrops, a small lighthouse and views back across the spit to the mainland skyline. The marine ranch operators run short boat trips for visitors interested in seeing the aquaculture pens up close, and some also sell fresh shellfish straight off the boats. Because there are no major built attractions, a visit is built around the coastal walk and the sand-spit beaches rather than a single sight; half a day covers the island loop, a beach stop and time at the marine ranch. Clear days are best both for the walking views and for boat trips out to the pens, since choppy water can cancel the shorter aquaculture tours.

Tips for visiting

  • Check tide times if planning to walk the sand spit -- some sections narrow at high tide
  • Boat trips to the marine ranch pens are weather-dependent and can be cancelled in rough seas
  • Bring cash if buying shellfish directly from the marine ranch operators
  • There is limited shade on the island -- bring sun protection for the walking loop
  • Combine with a stop at one of the sand-spit beaches for swimming before or after the walk

When to visit

Clear days with calm seas give the best walking views and the most reliable conditions for the marine ranch boat trips.

Accessibility

The sand spit and beach areas are not paved and can be soft underfoot; the island's coastal trails include rocky, uneven sections, making the site difficult for wheelchair users or visitors with limited mobility.
