Chaoyang Street is Yantai's restored treaty-port commercial district, running between the foot of Yantai Hill Park and the downtown waterfront in Zhifu District. The street was the city's main foreign business quarter after Yantai opened as a treaty port in 1861, and the surviving brick and stone facades -- built by Western trading firms, banks and the Changyu winery's early offices among others -- have been restored and repurposed as boutiques, cafes, wine bars and small galleries rather than left as a museum piece. Walking the full street takes well under an hour, but most visitors spend one to two hours browsing shopfronts, stopping for coffee or wine, and photographing the facades. Because Chaoyang Street sits directly between Yantai Hill Park and the waterfront, it works naturally as a connector stop rather than a standalone destination. The street is at its most atmospheric after dark, when the historic facades are lit and the wine bars -- a nod to Yantai's status as a major wine-producing region -- fill with a mixed crowd of locals and visitors; daytime visits are quieter and better suited to unhurried photography of the architecture itself.
