Shandong is a coastal province in eastern China, home to Mount Tai, the birthplace of Confucius at Qufu, the beer-making port of Qingdao, and Jinan, the City of Springs. Its capital is Jinan and its largest city is Qingdao. The province combines UNESCO heritage, a long Yellow Sea and Bohai coast, and Lu cuisine, one of China's Eight Great Cuisines.
Shandong occupies a peninsula on China's east coast, bordered by Hebei to the north, Henan to the west, Anhui and Jiangsu to the south, and the Bohai and Yellow Seas on the other sides. The Yellow River crosses the north, and the Grand Canal runs along the west. The centre holds Mount Tai in Tai'an and Jinan, the capital, with its famous springs. In the southwest, Qufu and Zoucheng are the home of Confucius and Mencius. The Shandong peninsula in the east includes Qingdao's German Quarter and beaches, Yantai and Penglai with their wine and coastline, and Weihai with its clean seafront and Liugong Island. High-speed rail links Jinan, Tai'an, Qufu, Qingdao, Yantai and Weihai in a few hours, and Jinan and Qingdao have metro systems.
