An 88-metre bronze standing Buddha completed in 1997 at the foot of Mashan beside Lake Taihu, the centrepiece of the Lingshan scenic area.
The Lingshan Grand Buddha (Lingshan Dafo) is an 88-metre bronze statue of Shakyamuni Buddha standing on a lotus pedestal at the foot of Mashan, on the northern shore of Lake Taihu in Wuxi's Binhu District. The figure was completed in 1997 and remains one of the tallest standing Buddha statues in China. The scenic area follows an axis that climbs from the Nine-Dragon Bathing Prince Buddha fountain, past a long avenue of statues, to the Grand Buddha itself.
Beyond the statue, the area includes the Lingshan Brahma Palace, a large Buddhist art complex with a theatre, the Xiangfu Temple, and a Mandala garden. Visitors climb about 100 steps to the base of the Buddha, or ride an escalator for an extra fee, and an interior lift reaches viewing and exhibition levels.
Plan three to five hours for the full route, longer if watching the Nine-Dragon fountain show, which runs at set times through the day and is posted at the gate. The area is large and exposed, so shade and water are worth carrying in summer. Tickets are sold on the venue's WeChat mini-program, Trip.com and at the gate, and a passport is used for identification.
