Safety information

INFO

Carry a passport and insurance and expect to pay a deposit.

INFO

Unlicensed cars and pedicabs near Wuxi Station, Wuxi East Station and scenic-area gates overcharge; use metered taxis or Didi, which shows an upfront fare.

INFO

Tea-house and art-gallery invitations from friendly strangers around the old lanes and Chongan Temple area can end in a large bill; decline politely and read menus for prices first.

INFO

Taihu Lake can bring algae blooms and strong winds in summer; follow staff and weather warnings on boat trips and do not swim in unmarked areas.

INFO

Tap water is not drinkable without boiling; buy bottled water. Wash fruit and choose busy food stalls.

INFO

Foreigners must register accommodation with the police; hotels do this at check-in, while short-term rentals require a police-station visit within 24 hours.
