Nongke Road Bar Street

Nongke Road Bar Street is the best-known evening drinking strip in Zhengzhou, the capital of Henan province in central China. The stretch runs for roughly 800 metres through Jinshui District between Huayuan Road and Jingsan Road, and it packs live-music bars, cocktail lounges, beer pubs and a few nightclubs into a compact, walkable area. The nearest metro access is Dongfeng Road station on Line 2, exit C, followed by a walk of about 500 metres. The crowd is mostly local residents in their twenties and early thirties, along with university students, office workers on after-work drinks and a smaller number of foreign teachers and business travellers based in the city. Dress is casual to smart-casual; there is no formal dress code at most bars, although the clubs on the strip tend to turn away visitors in shorts or flip-flops. Atmosphere changes by the hour. Early evening is relaxed, with people eating and sharing beer. After about 21:00 the live-music bars fill up, and by midnight the clubs at the end of the street are at their loudest. Music ranges from acoustic and folk sets through rock cover bands to electronic DJ nights, and Mandarin pop dominates the covers. Drinks are typical of a mid-sized Chinese city: bottled and draught beer from about ¥30 (~$4.50), cocktails at around ¥45-80 (~$6.70-12), whisky and brandy sold by the bottle with mixers, and fruit platters and snacks for sharing. Most bars open around 19:00 and stay open until about 02:00 daily, with Friday and Saturday the busiest nights and Sunday to Wednesday noticeably quieter. Entry is free at most bars, but weekend tables at popular venues often carry minimum spends of about ¥600-1500 (~$90-224), which usually include a bottle or a drinks set. Reservations are normally made by phone or WeChat through the venue, and are worth arranging for groups of four or more on weekends. Card and mobile payment through Alipay and WeChat Pay are standard, and cash is rarely needed. Visitors should carry a passport, since some venues check identification, and a translation app helps at bars without English menus.
