Zhengzhou travel guide: where to stay, what to do, and where to eat in Zhengzhou, Henan, China.
Cultural orientation
Essential context for travellers.
Mandarin is used everywhere; English is limited outside international hotels, the airport and the Henan Museum. Save the Chinese name and address of each destination in a phone note or translation app, and show it to taxi drivers.
Payment runs on Alipay and WeChat Pay. Link a foreign Visa or Mastercard to Alipay (Tour Pass) before arrival and carry some cash (CNY) as backup; small vendors and some museums still take banknotes.
Carry the original passport at all times. Hotels, the Henan Museum, rail stations, Shaolin Temple and many attractions scan it at entry and require real-name booking.
Expect bag X-ray checks at every metro station and railway station; allow a few extra minutes and avoid carrying knives or large aerosols.
Google, WhatsApp, Instagram and many Western apps are blocked without a VPN or roaming eSIM; install a VPN before landing and download offline maps and a translation app.
The Henan Museum, Shaolin Temple and the new Henan Science and Technology Museum use timed, real-name reservations via WeChat mini-programs or official sites; book several days ahead in holidays.
Do's and don'ts
Quick guide to local norms.
Do
- Greet with a smile and a nod; a light handshake is normal with business contacts.
- Accept and hand over cards, gifts and drinks with both hands.
- Say 'xièxie' (thanks) and 'zhōng' (OK) freely; both are appreciated in Henan.
- Dress modestly and speak quietly when entering temples such as Shaolin, Zhongyue Temple in Dengfeng or White Horse Temple in Luoyang.
- Try local specialities such as Henan braised noodles (huìmiàn), hulatang pepper soup and Kaifeng soup dumplings, and compliment the dishes.
- Queue for the metro and let passengers exit before boarding.
Don't
- Do not stick chopsticks upright in a bowl of rice; it resembles incense offered to the dead.
- Do not tip in restaurants or taxis; it is not expected and can cause confusion.
- Do not discuss sensitive political topics such as Taiwan, Tibet or Xinjiang with strangers, and never criticise the government in public or online.
- Do not photograph military or police installations, government buildings or people in worship without permission.
- Do not touch monks or point the soles of shoes at Buddha images.
- Do not spit, litter or smoke in no-smoking areas; fines apply in metro stations and on railway platforms.
