Heilongjiang is China's northernmost and easternmost province, a vast land of black soil plains, primeval forests, volcanic lakes, and Siberian-cold winters along the Amur (Heilong) River border with Russia. Its capital Harbin blends Russian-era architecture with the world's largest ice and snow festival, while Mohe, the Arctic Village, offers China's best chances of seeing the aurora and the midnight sun. Heilongjiang covers roughly 473,000 km² in China's far northeast, bordered by Russia to the north and east and by Jilin and Inner Mongolia to the south and west. Harbin, the provincial capital, is the gateway: its Central Street, Saint Sophia Cathedral, Sun Island, and the Songhua River promenade reflect early 20th-century Russian influence, and every winter the Harbin International Ice and Snow Festival turns the city into a glowing ice metropolis. Nearby Yabuli is China's premier ski resort, and the Siberian Tiger Park lets visitors see the world's largest cats. Further afield, Mohe and Beiji Village sit at China's northern tip for aurora and midnight-sun viewing, Wudalianchi has 14 volcanic cones and mineral springs, Zhalong near Qiqihar protects red-crowned cranes, and Jingpo Lake near Mudanjiang is a scenic volcanic barrier lake. Xingkai Lake, Heixiazi Island, the Sanjiang Plain wetlands, Tahe, Yichun forests, and Suifenhe on the Russian border add depth for slow travellers. The world's largest ice-and-snow theme park, rebuilt every winter with tens of thousands of blocks of ice cut from the frozen Songhua River. Full-size ice palaces, towers and slides are lit in colour after dark. Heilongjiang is China's northernmost province and very large, so the main rail and air network radiates from Harbin, the provincial capital. High-speed trains reach Beijing in about 7 hours, Shenyang in about 2 hours and Changchun in about 1 hour; slower regional routes run to Mudanjiang, Jiamusi, Qiqihar, Daqing, Yabuli and the far north. Inside Harbin the metro, buses and Didi cover the main sights. Distant areas such as Mohe (China's northernmost town) and Heihe need an overnight train or a flight. Heilongjiang has two headline seasons: deep winter (December to February) for the Harbin Ice and Snow Festival, skiing, and Mohe aurora chances, and a short cool summer (June to August) for lakes, wetlands, and forests. Autumn foliage peaks in late September to early October.
January lows reach -25C to -35C in Harbin and can drop below -40C in Mohe; pack thermal layers, insulated boots, and hand warmers. Ice and Snow World typically opens in late December and closes in late February, depending on ice conditions. Summer highs are 22C to 28C with July rain. Mohe's summer aurora season is mid-August to September; the winter season runs November to March.
