Getting Around Heilongjiang 2026

Heilongjiang is China's northernmost and easternmost province, a vast land of black soil plains, primeval forests, volcanic lakes, and Siberian-cold winters along the Amur (Heilong) River border with Russia. Its capital Harbin blends Russian-era architecture with the world's largest ice and snow festival, while Mohe, the Arctic Village, offers China's best chances of seeing the aurora and the midnight sun. Wetlands, ski resorts, crane habitats, and Hezhen and Manchu heritage complete a region that swings from -30C winters to warm, short summers.

Public

High-speed and regular trains on the China Railway network (booked on 12306 or Trip.com) connect Harbin with Beijing, Shenyang, Changchun, Qiqihar, Mudanjiang, Jiamusi, Daqing and Yabuli; Harbin has a three-line metro, extensive city buses and a Taiping airport bus

Taxi

Taxis are cheap and plentiful in Harbin; Didi (Chinese ride-hailing app, English interface available) works with foreign cards linked through Alipay or WeChat Pay and is the easiest way to avoid language problems

Rental

Foreign visitors cannot drive in mainland China on a foreign licence or an International Driving Permit; a Chinese licence is required, so self-drive rental is effectively not available. Chartered cars with a driver are the alternative for Yabuli, Wudalianchi and Mohe

Walking

The Zhongyang Pedestrian Street and Sophia Cathedral area are walkable, but winter lows of -25C to -35C and icy pavements make long walks difficult from December to February; summers are pleasant for walking
