Heilongjiang is China's northernmost and easternmost province, a vast land of black soil plains, primeval forests, volcanic lakes, and Siberian-cold winters along the Amur (Heilong) River border with Russia. Its capital Harbin blends Russian-era architecture with the world's largest ice and snow festival, while Mohe, the Arctic Village, offers China's best chances of seeing the aurora and the midnight sun. Wetlands, ski resorts, crane habitats, and Hezhen and Manchu heritage complete a region that swings from -30C winters to warm, short summers.

Songhua River and Sun Island from Harbin
Sun Island is a large river-island park with lawns, wetlands and a Russian-style arts square. In summer it has boating and river beaches; in winter the Songhua River freezes and hosts the Harbin Snow Sculpture Expo and ice activities.
Unit 731 Museum (Pingfang) from Harbin
A museum and preserved site of the Japanese military's biological warfare program (1932-1945) with exhibitions, foundations and a memorial. A sobering historical visit; allow 2-3 hours.
Siberian Tiger Park (Northeast Tiger Forest Park) from Harbin
The world's largest Siberian tiger breeding centre, with several hundred tigers. Visitors ride enclosed buses through tiger enclosures and walk on elevated paths.

A Russian-themed park with replicas of Russian architecture, an orthodox church, a Soviet-era exhibit, and a summer garden. Popular for Russian cuisine and Russian folk shows.
Ashi River and Jin Shangjing Museum from Harbin
The Jin Shangjing site and museum preserve the first Jurchen capital of the 12th century and its remains on the Ashi River. Suitable for history and archaeology travelers.
Yabuli Ski Resort from Harbin
China's largest ski area, with slopes at Yabuli Sun Mountain and the older Yabuli resort. Season runs from about mid-November to March with plentiful snow.
Zhalong Nature Reserve from Harbin via Qiqihar
Wetland reserve famous for red-crowned cranes and thousands of migratory birds. Best in spring and autumn, with boardwalks, an observation tower and a crane exhibition.
Wudalianchi Volcanic Park from Harbin
A volcanic landscape of five linked lakes, cones and lava fields formed by eruptions in 1719-1721. Includes mineral springs and mud baths; the geopark is a UNESCO Global Geopark.
Jingpo Lake from Harbin via Mudanjiang
China's largest alpine barrier lake, with the Diaoshuilou Waterfall and volcanic basalt cliffs. Offers boat cruises in summer and ice fishing in winter.
China Snow Town (Xuexiang) from Mudanjiang
A famous winter village with heavy snowfall, thick snow sculptures and thatched cottages. Season is roughly November to March; heavy snow makes it best as an overnight trip.
Daqing Oil City from Harbin
China's oil city, with the Iron Man memorial hall and the Daqing Museum in the Songnen Plain. Wetland parks and lakes nearby add a natural contrast.
